DIY Home Painting Tips

While it does take a bit of effort, painting your house is something most people can do. Depending on the conditions, you will understand how hard or how easy the painting project is going to be. For those who make the time to do it, you can save a lot of money. If you think that there isn’t the time, then you must look into hiring someone.

Prepare Your Walls

Paint does not last indefinitely, and eventually it will begin to peel and look horrible. Truth be told, your best option might be to scrape the paint off your wall. When you have an older home, chances are that you have layers of old paint below your current one. It can be much more challenging if the layer of paint below was oil-based. After you’re done scraping the paint from the walls, you are going to either need to putty holes in the wall if it’s wood or spackle if it is drywall then sand it down. When this is completed, wipe off the dust, and give it time to get completely dry. You may want to wait 24 hours before it dries entirely.

Check For Leaks

Older houses may have an issue with moisture build-up. You might find paint fractures if your home has got excessive condensation or leaks. This really is typical in the bathrooms where there is extreme moisture along with mold and mildew. While common in bathrooms, this problem can also occur in other parts of the home. Sometimes your house will have a leak, or bushes that are too close. If your paint is cracking because of moisture build-up, you will need a different solution. In the event the paint cracking is actually inside, you will want to make a solution of one part bleach and three parts water to stop the mildew buildup. If it is outside of the home, simply use the solution that is included with a pressure washer.

Choose Suitable Colors

An additional problem that needs a painter, is when the color is fading, which normally happens on the exterior. This occurs most often outside the home where there is direct sunlight practically for the whole day. To reduce fade, avoid using bright colors like red for your house. If you’d like colors that get noticed, try ones that tend to be golden or with a ruddy tone.

It is best to try to keep your home appearing fresh and new. You need to take some time to repaint every few years and deal with any leaks once they happen.
